Offbeat one-off Veyron billed as the world’s first vehicle with porcelain elements in its interior and exterior
Bugatti has rolled out any number of special-edition Veyrons in the latter half of the 400km/h-plus hypercar’s life cycle, and now here’s one more that’s bound to stir the pot.
Pictured alongside is the Veyron L’or Blanc (“White Gold”), which was conceived in partnership with royal porcelain manufacturer Königliche Porzellan-Manufatur Berlin (KPM).
Based on the Veyron Grand Sport – touted as the world’s fastest convertible with a top whack of 407km/h (or 360km/h with the roof off) – the L’Or Blanc features interior and exterior accoutrements crafted from porcelain, distinguishing it from any of the number of Veyron one-offs that have preceded it.
“At first, it seems to be an unusual idea to use porcelain in a car, especially in the world's fastest convertible,” said Bugatti sales and marketing director Stefan Brungs. “But this is what Bugatti stands for: the realisation of exceptional ideas whilst striving for the utmost in quality and aesthetics.”
“This allows us to continue Ettore Bugatti’s heritage, who himself loved to experiment with new materials.”
Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin boss and car aficionado Jörg Woltmann added, “The impulse for the partnership came from Rembrandt Bugatti’s renowned elephant (the mascot that sat atop the radiator of the iconic Bugatti Royale, built from 1927 to 1933).
Naturally, the ultra-exclusive Veyron doesn’t come cheap, and its ex-factory price of 1.65m euros represents a premium of over 250,000 euros vis-à-vis the standard Grand Sport.
Meanwhile, Bugatti has announced it has taken its final order for the Veyron coupe, bringing to an end its 300-unit production run.
The milestone comes six years after the Veyron was launched in 2005, rewriting the rulebook for what could be achieved in a road-legal car. It was the first production vehicle to have a full carbonfibre monocoque, and Bugatti claims its torsional rigidity of 60,000Nm per degree remains unparalleled to this day.
The 8.0-litre W16 quad-turbo engine offers a still peerless 736kW (barring a couple of madcap rival concoctions that haven’t notched up any more than a handful of sales), and its 0-100km/h split of 2.5sec remains a benchmark.
With its carbon-ceramic brakes, innovative brake cooling system and rear spoiler that activates to serve as an additional air brake, the Veyron can come to a standstill from 100km/h in just 31.4 metres and 2.3sec.
Although it’s the end of the road for the Veyron coupe, the open-topped Grand Sport version will remain in production until it, too, reaches 300 units.
